Roof insulation and photovoltaics for broiler farms

Solar energy integration for energy independence in broiler chicken farming

or

Detail description

This Good Practice improves carbon neutrality at a broiler farm producing 380,000 medium-weight broilers annually. A 50 kW photovoltaic system, covering 90 m², was installed on the barn roof in 2012. Roof renovations included insulated corrugated sandwich panels with 15 mm polystyrene. Proper sizing, location, and orientation maximise energy and economic returns. The system reduces grid dependence, lowers long-term energy costs, and increases resilience to power outages. While no specific risks are involved, fire insurance covering replacement value is recommended. Solar energy supports ventilation, lighting, heating, and other farm operations, enhancing sustainability in broiler production.
