Landscape-scale management of arable weeds and weed-seed predators

This study reviews how landscape properties influence arable weed and carabid communities, showing heterogeneous landscapes support greater species richness without increasing weed infestation and promote stable biological weed regulation via carabid seed predation.

This paper examines the impact of landscape-scale management on arable weeds and carabid beetle regulation. First, it reviews evidence on how landscape composition and heterogeneity affect weed species richness and infestation levels. Second, it analyzes how these landscape properties influence carabid communities and their weed seed predation. The authors find that heterogeneous landscapes harbor more diverse weed and carabid communities, while total abundances remain unchanged. Weed seed predation varies with landscape context and predator identity. The results suggest that landscape heterogeneity can enhance biodiversity and provide stable pest regulation services without worsening weed issues.
